During development (codenamed Anaheim), Microsoft made preview builds of Edge available on Windows 7, 8/8.1, 10, and macOS.
In December 2018, Microsoft announced plans to rebuild the browser as Chromium-based with Blink and V8 engines. Įdge was initially built with Microsoft's own proprietary browser engine EdgeHTML and their Chakra JavaScript engine, a version now referred to as Microsoft Edge Legacy. The Chromium-based Edge replaced Internet Explorer (IE) in Windows 11, as the default web browser (for compatibility with Google Chrome web browser).
